Nederland Comprehensive Plan Update
The Town of Nederland is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan; a key policy document used to guide the goals, expectations, and vision for the development of the community. The comprehensive plan helps align stakeholders, establishes goals and objectives for the Town's growth, and provides the foundation for regulatory tools like zoning, subdivision, and annexation regulations.
The Comprehensive Plan update is a chance for the community to come together and determine its strategic direction for the next several years
The Town of Nederland has hired a team of consultants to engage the community, research planning topics, and ultimately deliver an updated Comprehensive Plan to the Town. The interdisciplinary consultant team includes staff from SE Group, StudioSeed, and Fehr & Peers, bringing combined expertise in community planning, public engagement, transportation planning, and urban design.
Why Update?
Originally written in 1987, the Nederland Comprehensive Plan has gone through several important updates over the years. The plan saw its first major update in 1994, "to include elements and issues not typically addressed in a traditional comprehensive planning process, including governmental administration, ordinance enforcement, and budgeting."
The next major update came in 2002, with three main objectives: 1.) to delete items that had been completed or were no longer an issue, 2.) add items that should be addressed in the future, and 3.) to reference other planning documents that had been adopted.
The most recent update - in 2013 - incorporated new ways of thinking that reflected the continued growth in Boulder County, including sustainability as it relates to long-range planning, and recognizing the planning work that the community has achieved since 2002.
Today, Nederland continues to grow and has become a different place in the last ten years. Comprehensive plans are typically updated every 7 to 10 years to reflect the changes that have occurred within the community and shifts in public goals.
