Summer Road Improvement Plan

During the June 20th Board of Trustees meeting, Streets Manager Mark Hall laid out a 4-phase plan to enhance safety, durability, and sustainability for Nederland's roads this summer, while helping reduce the cost of maintenance. The plan includes:

  • Phase 1 - Creating a series of runoff ditches around Town to get rain and snowmelt to flow in proper directions, protecting both roads and properties from flooding and water damage.
  • Phase 2 - Grading all gravel roads in Nederland an ensuring each road has a proper crown - a 2% slope from the center of the road to the edges - which will help move water away from the road to reduce erosion and improve overall road conditions.
  • Phase 3 - Adding aggregate to the freshly graded roads. Aggregate is a broad term to the sand, gravel, and stone that lays on the surface of gravel roads to help provide a stable foundation for roads and increase traction.
  • Phase 4 - Install driveway culverts. After the roads are taken care of, the Streets department will shift focus to identifying which properties around Town will require driveway culverts, and then take the proper care to install these new culverts without disrupting utilities, roads, or driveways.
