Streets & Sidewalks Improvement Project
The Town of Nederland has been awarded grant funding through numerous grants to repair, update, and pave streets and sidewalks around Town.
This project is broken down into different areas, based on the source of the funding. The majority of work is expected to go through 2024.
Project Overview
Transportation Improvement Project (TIP)
The Town received funding from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to promote alternative transportation and pedestrian travel. The Transportation Improvement Project (TIP) consists of creating a sidewalk on West First Street connecting RTD Park-n-Ride with the Visitor's Center and Jefferson Street adjacent to the Kathmandu Plaza. The project includes a high-speed electric vehicle charging station, bike racks, a rain garden/planter, and wayfinding signage. The staff is collaborating with the Nederland Downtown Development Authority (NDDA) to repave the Visitor's Center Parking Lot and North Jefferson Street as part of this project.
Safer Main Streets (SMS)
The Town also received funding from DRCOG to promote pedestrian safety and alternative transportation. The Safer Main Streets (SMS) Project improves the existing crusher fine sidewalks on Highway 72, adds improved pedestrian crossing at First Street and Highway 119 and the library pedestrian crossing at Highway 72, and installs traffic calming components to reduce speeds.
Multimodal Transportation Project (MTP)
The Town was awarded funding from CDOT for a Multimodal Transportation Plan. Transportation plans help communities make decisions about what type of programs, policies, and projects to advance and fund in the future. They help local governments create an equitable transportation system that aligns with community goals and objectives in the medium to long-term. While transportation plans consider all modes of transportation, they have a particular focus on surface transportation including walking, bicycling, transit, and motor vehicle travel.

Parking Lot closures will begin late Monday August 14th, with the paving planned to start on Tuesday morning.
It is expected that paving will last all day Tuesday and into Wednesday. Businesses in the parking lot area will still be opened during this time.
Since this will reduce a primary source of parking in the downtown area, we are asking that you use other public parking area around Town. We have highlighted other public parking areas that can be utilized during this time:
We are expecting the parking lot to be finished and reopened late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Visitor Center EV Chargers to move the week of July 17th

This will mean that there will be no EV charger available for use the week of July 17, 2023. As soon as the charger is installed in the new location, we will provide another update.
Alternative EV Charging Locations:
- Nederland Middle/Senior High School: 597 CO Hwy 130, Nederland, CO 80466
- Nederland Elementary School: 1 Sundown Trail, Nederland, CO 80466
We are anticipating that the Visitor Center parking lot will be repaved the end of July/beginning of August. Once we embark on that project, the Level II chargers will be inaccessible again. As soon as we have the date for the repaving narrowed in, we will provide another update.
The Town also intends to install a Level III charger in the southwest corner; however, the electrical needs to be upgraded slightly by Xcel to accommodate those new chargers. We anticipate that the Level III chargers will be installed spring 2024 at the latest.

Summer Road Improvement Plan
Share Summer Road Improvement Plan on Facebook Share Summer Road Improvement Plan on Twitter Share Summer Road Improvement Plan on Linkedin Email Summer Road Improvement Plan linkDuring the June 20th Board of Trustees meeting, Streets Manager Mark Hall laid out a 4-phase plan to enhance safety, durability, and sustainability for Nederland's roads this summer, while helping reduce the cost of maintenance. The plan includes:
- Phase 1 - Creating a series of runoff ditches around Town to get rain and snowmelt to flow in proper directions, protecting both roads and properties from flooding and water damage.
- Phase 2 - Grading all gravel roads in Nederland an ensuring each road has a proper crown - a 2% slope from the center of the road to the edges - which will help move water away from the road to reduce erosion and improve overall road conditions.
- Phase 3 - Adding aggregate to the freshly graded roads. Aggregate is a broad term to the sand, gravel, and stone that lays on the surface of gravel roads to help provide a stable foundation for roads and increase traction.
- Phase 4 - Install driveway culverts. After the roads are taken care of, the Streets department will shift focus to identifying which properties around Town will require driveway culverts, and then take the proper care to install these new culverts without disrupting utilities, roads, or driveways.
Follow the process here, as we add the Summer Road Improvement Plan to the lifecycle of the Streets & Sidewalks Improvement Plan, and be sure to check out the Summer Road Improvement Plan presentation as well.

Summer Improvement Plan Phase 1 - Drainage Ditches
Streets & Sidewalks Improvement Project has finished this stageThis is all about water, folks. We're starting by digging some proper drainage ditches. We want the rain and snowmelt to flow where it's supposed to go, and not wash out our roads. We'll carefully create these ditches to work with our town's unique landscape, keeping in mind the utilities near the surface in some areas.
-
Summer Improvement Plan Phase 2 - Grading Gravel Roads
Streets & Sidewalks Improvement Project has finished this stageNext up, we're going to be grading our gravel roads. This is a fancy way of saying we'll shape and smooth them so they drain properly and don't get messed up as easily. We're doing it the right way this time - each road will have a proper 'crown' to ensure that water drains off the surface.
-
Summer Improvement Project Phase 3 - Adding Aggregate
Streets & Sidewalks Improvement Project has finished this stageOnce we've got our roads shaped correctly, we're going to strengthen them by adding aggregate. This is basically a mix of sand, gravel, and stone that's going to make our roads more stable and durable. It's also going to make future maintenance a whole lot easier and efficient.

this is an upcoming stage for Streets & Sidewalks Improvement ProjectLastly, we're going to check out which driveways in town need culverts. That's basically a drain or pipe that lets water pass beneath your driveway. This phase depends on getting everything else right first, but it may be the most important aspect.
